La Cocina Mexican Restaurant

Overview

Walking into La Cocina Mexican Restaurant feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot where everyone already knows your order. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long workday, and the first thing that always hits is the smell-warm corn tortillas, slow-simmered meats, and fresh cilantro cutting through the air. The restaurant sits at 6965 S 2300 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84121, United States, which makes it an easy stop for locals and a pleasant surprise for visitors exploring this part of town.

The menu leans heavily into traditional Mexican comfort food, and that’s where this place shines. One of the cooks once explained to me how their beans are prepared early in the morning and left to cook low and slow, a method common in central Mexico. You can taste that patience. The carne asada comes out tender with a slight char, and the enchiladas are drenched in a sauce that’s rich without being overpowering. A server told me they adjust spice levels daily based on the chilies they receive, which explains why the heat always feels balanced rather than aggressive. That kind of hands-on process is rare and shows real care behind the scenes.

What stands out most is consistency. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, repeat customers are the backbone of successful local restaurants, accounting for over 60% of visits. That statistic makes sense here. I’ve brought friends, coworkers, and family, and the plates look and taste the same every time. When a place can deliver that level of reliability, it builds trust fast. You see it reflected in the reviews, where regulars mention favorite dishes and familiar staff by name.

Beyond flavor, there’s a strong focus on freshness. The USDA emphasizes that fresh produce retains more nutrients and flavor, and it shows in the pico de gallo and salsas served here. The tomatoes are bright, the onions crisp, and nothing tastes like it’s been sitting around. One afternoon, I watched a prep cook chopping vegetables right near the dining area, which instantly boosted my confidence in the kitchen’s standards. It also aligns with food safety guidance from the CDC, which highlights transparency and cleanliness as key factors in consumer trust.

The atmosphere stays casual and welcoming. You’ll hear laughter from nearby tables, families sharing plates, and solo diners scrolling through their phones while waiting for tacos al pastor. The dining room isn’t flashy, but it’s comfortable, and that’s intentional. A longtime manager once said their goal was to create home-style Mexican cooking in a space where people feel relaxed enough to stay awhile. That idea carries through everything, from the friendly greetings to the generous portions.

Locations matter too, and this spot serves as a convenient hub for the surrounding neighborhood. Whether you’re grabbing lunch between errands or sitting down for dinner, it fits easily into daily routines. Many reviews mention how simple it is to park, order, and enjoy a full meal without feeling rushed. That ease is part of the appeal and one reason people keep coming back.

No restaurant is perfect, and it’s fair to note that peak hours can mean a short wait, especially on weekends. Still, the staff usually acknowledges it upfront, which goes a long way. Transparency like that builds credibility, and it’s something industry experts often point to as a marker of well-run establishments. In my experience, the food is worth the extra few minutes, and most diners seem to agree, judging by the steady hum of satisfied conversations around the room.

We had not been to La Cocina years and years, it was a super lunch choice. My husband does not eat and a Mexican food so he ordered the fish and chips and he got three really nice pieces of fish and plenty of fries and they were hot and fresh and really tasty. I ordered a chili Verde burrito, smothered with rice and beans. It was absolutely delicious and a very large portion. I love their chips and salsa that came with the meal. Their green tomatillo salsa was exceptionally good. Our waitress was super kind and friendly and took the time to check on us all in all I would highly recommend giving them a try. I only put a photo of the salsa on there as I didn’t want to take a photo of our plates after we had already started eating…. I’ll remember next time. Lol

This has been a staple of mine for many years, but I'm just now getting around to reviewing them. I almost always order the "Large Quesadilla Especiale" with no meat. It comes with all the fixings (sour cream, guacamole, etc) and is delicious! I recommend adding extra jalapeños. This isn't what I would call authentic Mexican fare, more like "Americanized" Mexican fare, but it's still delicious and you get a lot for your money. The staff are always super friendly and offer their suggestions when ordering. This place has a full bar and their salsa is made in-house.

I didn't have any expectations but was just excited to chat with friends who I haven't seen for a while plus I'm hungry too. Place has got a warm and happy vibes, server was super nice and yes, food were served hot and very delicious and in generous servings too. Good Mexican food and would definitely come back soon.

I have been looking for a GOOD Mexican food place and I have definitely found it! I found this place less than 2 weeks ago and have eaten here twice. Once in house and the other I ordered very easily in the app they have for small businesses. This by far is the best in town and I will be come back very often. The staff is so friendly and kind. I know have a place to take my family and friends that come from out of town to a good Mexican food place. 5 starts ALL DAY!!!

I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars. It’s easily my new #1 favorite Mexican restaurant. Their chips and salsa is an amazing starter. Both their red and green salsas are seriously addictive. I highly recommend the combination plate because you get a little bit of everything. I loved everything on the combination plate. It really hit the spot. Aside from the absolutely spectacular food, the vibes were great! The inside of the restaurant has very fun and colorful decor. It’s also very spacious and clean. Everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves. The service was also excellent. I can’t say enough good things about this place, you have to come and try it for yourself!!

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. The free margaritas on Tuesday and Saturday are brilliant. Even the virgin ones for us Mormons were good. Can’t go wrong with the combination plate. The enchiladas were way good, and I normally don’t like enchiladas. However I was mopping up these enchiladas and their sauce all over my rice.

Great traditional Mexican restaurant. Been coming here for years, the service is fantastic, the wait staff is consistent which tells me they are good people to work for. The food is great, chips and salsa are fabulous, absolutely love the green tomatillo salsa. We’ll always come back here. Don’t forget free margarita Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday!!!
